It’s that busy time of year in South Africa when we are out and about on the roads making the most of the long weekends.
Tyre safety comes under the spotlight – because that’s where the rubber truly hits the road. As the only part of your vehicle that makes direct contact with the road, tyres are your first line of defence, so to speak. ?
Fortunately, we work with some real experts when it comes to tyre safety, and we’ve gleaned key information that you may find useful before heading out on the road.
Here are 5 quick checks recommended by our clients Sumitomo Rubber South Africa, Dunlop Tyres SA and the South African Tyre Manufacturers Conference:
• Have your tyres balanced and your wheel alignment checked before travelling.
• Is your tyre tread more than 1.6mm? Manufacturers recommend that drivers use the Tread Wear Indicator (TWI), located around the circumference of the tyre to check tread depth. Replace the tyre if any part of the tyre tread is level with the TWI.
• Check your tyre pressure regularly, including that of your spare tyre.
• Check your tyres for cuts, bulges, or other signs of damage.
• Tyres are just one part of the vehicle. Make sure all lights, indicators, wipers and brakes are in working order.
Ensure that a tyre inspection is part of your leaving home checklist, and stay safe!
